This head of Bhairava pays tribute to the protective form of Shiva. Bhairava is among the more popular forms of Shiva as he is in great anger in this form and in his rage he is able to destroy all enemies. Note crown is edged with a belt of human heads. The painted sculpture is reminiscent of the Sweta Bhairava in the Kathmandu Valley, the stout features and puffed cheeks. A product of old Bungamati, Kathmandu Valley, 1999. A Hindu image also worshipped by tribal and shamanistic religions and some Buddhist sects. |
