Krishna is among the well known deities of Hinduism. Believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu he was brought up by the gopala cow-herding community before he came onto his own kingdom by killing his evil uncle. Note that he plays an important part in the Mahabharata epic. In this image, he is shown as a musician playing his favorite instrument, the flute. The image shows him a young man who is well built and well to do, note the well crafted crown, earrings, long hair let loose in front of his shoulders, and the long shawl. He also wears a garland of flowers, a reminder of the cow herding days. A product of old Bungamati, Kathmandu Valley, 1999. Hindu image. |
