Kuber is known in Eastern scriptures as a lord of wealth and economy. This art piece shows him a plump figure. Unless wealthy, people in the Himalayas rarely put on weight due to the hard nature of their lives. He wears a uniquely crafted crown, bracelets, and two necklaces featuring vajras. Note the well shaped hair, large ears, and flowing shawl around the shoulders. The statue has a touch of humor; the lord holds a fruit or sweet in his right hand and a mouse in the left hand. He frowns at the mouse, perhaps annoyed at finding him raiding his granary. A product of old Bungamati, Kathmandu Valley, 1999. The Hindu image has strong Tibetan features signifying links to the Higher Himalayas and, perhaps, Buddhism. |
