One of the three gods of the Hindu pantheon, Lord Vishnu is in Dhyana mudra meditation form. He sits astride his Garuda, a mythical half-man, half-bird. The statue features great detail, particularly in the fabric decoration. The ladies at the sides appear to be Mahalaxmi and Saraswati, goddesses of prosperity and lore. Note the fine diadem and the lotus pedestal. A product of old Bungamati, Kathmandu Valley, 1999. The Hindu diety is also worshipped by tribal and shamanistic cultures of the Himalayas and the southern plains of the Indian Sub-continent. |
