Visual arts coverage offers quarters in sketching techniques (drawing tools,
charcoal and pastel); wet mediums (acrylic and oil); experiments in modern arts techniques;
extreme art featuring live as well as installation art; sculpture and photography. From
learning historical backgrounds, movements, contributing personalities, to practicing,
exhibiting, to presenting their own creations, the education allows participants to gain unique
insight into the world of visual arts. Spiny Babbler has extensive experience in working with
visual arts at the highest level. Its art gallery and exhibitions have attracted the praise of the
national media. Books focusing on visual artwork by Spiny Babbler are Sun on the Mountains (paintings by Pallav Ranjan and poems by Para Limbu), publisher the Dutch Consulate;
Women of the Hindu-Kush Himalayas containing 20 oil work, publisher ICIMOD; Mountains
Forever mixed media work, published with support from Helvetas; and Dark Flowers containing organic monochrome work by Param Meyangbo.
Literature is covered through story-telling (oral and written approaches), poetry,
translation, and research techniques. Participants learn technical writing skills, creative
approaches, interviewing skills, and, to a limit, editing. They walk through layout and design,
printing, and web publishing processes. They meet known literary figures and visit locations
and experience situations that excite and inspire the mind. Spiny Babbler, established in 1991
as a poetry journal, has a strong literature culture. Its Modern Poets of Europe: A Selection featured 10 Nobel Laureates among 100+ poets from 24 European nations. Creative writing
departments 22 universites of Australasia participated in Anthology of Australasian Stories.
Schools from five continents participated in Young Minds of Twenty Nations. Spiny Babbler has
held numerous readings by the finest of Nepalese writers, it has organized writing
workshops and international editors/poets/artists participate in its events.
Performing arts features music, theatre/video film, dance, and 3d animation.
Spiny Babbler has internal resources to plan, design, record, and publish music. It has
presented plays such as “Muna Madan,” “Swasthani,” “The Trap,” at 5-star establishments
such Hotel de’l Annapurna, Hotel Yak and Yeti and other locations before audiences
including ambassadors and heads of international missions, musicians, artists, and writers. Its
“Seven Wonders of Kathmandu” integrated 3d animation with video and was supported by
UNESCO, “Goreto Nisafko,” directly involved village people in presenting a story revolving
around cancer and conflict and was funded by UNDP, “Driver,” involved real-life characters
such as police, garage hands, and hotel-keepers in telling a powerful tale of challenges,
hopes, and murder and was supported by ARD-USAID. It has presented plays/musical
performances at Kanti Children’s Hospital, Maternity Hospital, Spiny Babbler premises,
Mental Hospital, and other urban and rural locations. |
