Villages
and townships, ethnic groups, and social classes
are communities that Spiny Babbler works with.
Spiny Babbler has a sporadic one-time involvement
with some communities while in others it attempts
to create a longer term involvement with community
leaders, schools and educational institutions,
press and mass media, and creators (as in writers,
artists, musicians, and theatre personalities).
A nationwide approach has taken Spiny Babbler
to several key cities and townships of Nepal as
well as across the border to Darjeeling, India.
Activities in Darjeeling, Narayanghat, Thaiba,
and Sankhu are expected to feature long term involvement
and efforts are underway to incorporate the underprivileged
Dalit community and the tribal Kirats in the program.
Besides these long term efforts, activities have
taken place or are taking place in Dharan, Kirtipur,
Pokhara, and inner Patan City.
As
it is important to learn about the communities
and establish stronger working relationships,
initial communication, events, and fact finding
take up to a year's efforts. Follow-up events
include readings and sharing, intercultural exchange
and exhibitions, as well as arts-related festivals.
The
main objectives of the program area are to:
- Motivate youth and community leaders to be
pro-active and use the arts in ways that have
direct impact on the understanding of the lives,
human values, and the cultures of the concerned
community.
- Stress upon the community leaders, educators,
and creators the need for participatory, inclusive,
and gender sensitive approach to arts education
and involvement.
- Highlight local arts and creators and share
newer arts approaches and outside influences
in manners that instill among children, youth,
and creators greater confidence in their abilities
and talent and to document and collect data
on local creators and creations.
- Promote greater arts appreciation, analysis,
and critique of local and outside art forms.
Particularly,
under-funded government schools where students
who would otherwise not enjoy such activities
are encouraged to take part in programs that involve
the entire institution as well as specific age
groups. Many of the children feel isolated from
others, especially between social classes that
are apparent even at their age between boarding
schools and public schools. The community program
works to break down this wall, as all arts require
one's exploration, expression, and contact with
the outside world as well as the self. Youth take
part in activities related to the arts in drawing,
painting, literature, music, and theater. Spiny
Babbler desires those who take part in its art
programs to leave from them with a positive outlook
on their involvement and skills.
Teachers,
community leaders, and creators are invited to
participate in workshops wherein they can gather
the skills to properly nurture the artistic abilities
of the community's youth and generate greater
interests in community activities. Individual
memberships and contributions from national and
international organizations, and Spiny Babbler
Communication Services to international organizations
working in Nepal help fund the program. You can
become a member and support the Spiny Babbler
community program.
Some
communities may not have as urgent a need for
the support of Spiny Babbler as others it is necessary
to prioritize resources through a preliminary
program is assessed. Those communities judged
as underprivileged and suitable target groups
for Spiny Babbler programs participate in a five
year process through which their progress and
acceptance is analyzed and the program modified
to accommodate for their specific requirements.
Process:
- Generate
community belief in Spiny Babbler.
- Develop
relationships with community members, the leaders
among them, and local organizations through
which analysis of the program is conducted.
- Increase
interest in community events and surroundings
while promoting expression and confidence.
- To
have inclusive workshops for community leaders
and youth based on the benefits of the arts
and local artists, festivals, and community
monuments activate them on personal and organizational
levels.
- Mobilize
local human resources towards their independent
involvement with arts related activities and
interests.
Following
the analytical and educational process the community
will have acquired sufficient skill and knowledge
to maintain established outputs.
Outputs:
- Communities
better understand the various aspects of the
arts and its effects.
- Create
a self-reliant and dependable support system
for community members to come to for assistance
in planning community events, promoting awareness
and dealing with community issues such as discrimination
and repression.
- Aware
of community issues and the psychological benefits
related to the arts as well as the ability to
communicate this awareness to others through
respective levels of the community and through
community events.
