Prisoners
Assistance Mission (PAM) was set-up in the early
1990s. It works with the children of men and women
who have been sentenced to prison. The organization
believes confinement of children in prison is
not suitable, as prison environments do not offer
children the care and education that they have
a right to. Children who are forced to live in
prison because of their parents' and guardians'
imprisonment risk physical and mental abuse and
are often ostracized by other children they go
to school with.
The
mission was initiated by the late Parijat, a leading
Nepalese writer, and offers the children a residence
where basic nutrition, education, health care,
and other essential needs are met. It assures
a secure, supportive environment and equal opportunities.
Spiny Babbler in association with PAM has implemented
an arts program at the residence. The program
aims to work with children so that they enjoy
the arts and learn about traditional and contemporary
arts of Nepal and abroad. It works to further
their creative self-exploration and their use
of the arts in ways that are fulfilling.
