Meeting with Mr. Keshab Maharjan, Secretary, ward no. 15
Date: March 2, 2005
Site: Ward no. 15, Taudaha
Name of person(s) visiting project site: Bibhuti Bista (Associate Program Officer)
Total number of participants: 3 + 1 (SB official)
Findings: The Taudaha Lake lies in ward no.15 and is the largest ward in Kirtipur. It is comprised of four VDCs and has a total of six schools among which three are run by the government while three are privately owned. Within the vicinity of the Taudaha Lake there are 100 – 150 households. According to Mr. Maharjan, the local populace and schools in Taudaha are interested in participating in conservation efforts.

Findings: It was observed that the local populace in Taudaha practiced animal husbandry, mixed cropping, and that a few individuals were engaged in mushroom farming. Households were scattered and activities like fishing and boating were not allowed in the lake. Another important observation was that women and children were washing clothes and releasing soap foams directly into the lake.
Corrective measures taken: An important part of TEMLP’s objective will be to educate the local populace to adopt proper health and sanitation practices that will reduce water pollution.
   
Meeting with Taudaha Youth Club

Findings: The lake is an important religious and cultural site of Taudaha. It is believed that Karkotak Naagraja and Naagrani (the King and Queen of Serpents) reside here. Proper conservation measures need to be introduced in Taudaha. Cleaning activities also need to be carefully monitored as well meaning efforts may, in the long run, affect the water ecosystem in the lake, for example, the removal of important aquatic life and plants. According to club members, the community in Taudaha is planning to build a water channel along agricultural land areas.
   
Community visit

Site: Chui Gaon and Khatri Chaap, Taudaha

Findings: In Chui Gaon, more than 90% of the total population are Newars (Maharjans) while in Khatri Chaap more than 90% of the total population are Chhetris. The communities in both areas are heavily dependent on agriculture.

Findings: According to Mr. Purushottam Budhathoki, Taudaha is the only wetland area in the Kathmandu Valley and that migratory bird species that visited the lake was 66%. The maxmium depth of the lake was six meter. He was particularly interested in developing a sustainable development program that would contribute to local livelihoods in the area. According to him, 73.88% of the local inhabitant in Taudaha was interested in introducing boating activities to boost eco-tourism and that harmful plant species found in the lake could be turned into useful compost.

Findings: Taudaha Youth Club members said that the total number of bird species reached 200 during winter and that the literacy rate in Taudaha was above 50%. Drinking water facilities was provided by Naumule.
During this visit, Spiny Babbler representatives met up with school principals and provided them with Spiny Babbler brochures and information on TEMLP. The list of schools is given below:

Findings: Mr. Maharjan assisted Spiny Babbler representatives to point out important geographical features of the Taudaha area and said that the lake covered an area of 84 ropanis.

Total no. of participants: 9 + 2 (SB officials)
Findings: During this visit, representatives from three schools and youth club members discussed the local clubs, schools, and samuhas who would participate in TEMLP. It was stressed that more clubs and samuhas should be encouraged to participate in the project and that meetings should be held every Friday during the week. Participants were enthusiastic about carrying out conservation efforts through the medium of the arts. There was also an emphasis for schools to provide their annual calendar of events to the working committee.

Field visit

Site: Taudaha Lakeside
Name of person(s) visiting project site: Ranju Thapa (Networking and Outreach), Sangit Maharjan (Program Assistant), and Bibhuti Bista (Associate Program Officer)
Findings: The main purpose of the field visit was to attend a talk program organized by Bamboo Rattan Society of Nepal. The program addressed how rural communities could sustain local livelihoods through the production and sale of bamboo products. A participant said that the plantation of bamboos on the eastern side of the Taudaha Lake could reduce the flow of sediments from nearby agricultural lands.

Visit to Chalnakhel Forest Nursery

Findings: Fruit trees available for distribution were oranges, guava, jyamir, and lapsi. The total number of plants available for distribution was 3,200.
   
Observation and inquiry regarding Taudaha Lake
Date: May 16, 2005

Findings: Sediments carried by rain water and the drainage system adjacent to the main road deposited sediments in the northern eastern part of the lake. From September to March, 500 to 2000 water fowls visited the lake during peak hours while birds in large numbers were seen in January and February. The bakula was usually seen from June to August.
   
Visit to local schools and communities to invite them to form TEMLP’s working committee
The schedule regarding TEMLP’s art programs was distributed among schools. The art programs were scheduled to be held on May 18, 19, 20, and 26 at Shree Santoshee English School, Shuvakamana Academy, Taudaha Rastriya Maha Vidhyalaya, and Jal Vinayak respectively.
